GameTap is already one of my favorite places to spend some time when I don't have anything else pressing to play; the service's 800+ games always serve up some long-forgotten classic. Of course, the inclusion of the new Sam and Max episodes in the subscription price is also a nice selling point. Now it looks like there is another reason to sign up: Sega Saturn games are coming. Gamasutra has the news:
As for Bug!'s appearance on the service, the game's description explains that the debut is "…a hidden one-week sneak peek of planetary proportions", and continues: "Stay tuned for the launch of more games for the Sega Saturn later this year."
I was very excited about this until a post by a reader at Evil Avataroffered someinsightinto what games we can expect to see:
Is this going to be like their "Dreamcast" support? Which is to say… only Dreamcast games that ALSO had PC versions… so they aren't really Dreamcast games at all… it's just the PC version of a game that was also on Dreamcast.
Judging from the fact that their first "Saturn" game is Bug! (which was also released on PC)… I assume it's the same way. PC games which were also on Saturn. It's not actually emulating Saturn games or anything, so you'll never see most of the games that were on the Saturn, only the ones that also had PC versions.
Of course, Panzer Dragoon was available for PC, so even if we just get that game I'll be happy.
Update: GameTap has just contacted us to clear the air and say that these titles are fully emulated, and are not based on the PC ports of the games. This is great news; since the games are truly emulated that means the entire library of the system is opened up for future release via the service.
